Composition: Key ingredients include lithium chloride and potassium tellurite to inhibit most other bacteria, and egg yolk emulsion to help identify S. aureus through a lecithinase reaction (forming clear zones).
Appearance: The medium is a yellow-coloured opaque agar in a sterile disposable petri dish.
Staphylococcus aureus colonies on this agar: The colonies appear black due to the reduction of tellurite and are typically surrounded by a clear zone due to lecithinase activity.
Storage: The plates should be stored between 2°C and 8°C (for prepared plates) or 10°C and 30°C for the dehydrated base form
