HiMedia M189 TCBS Agar (Thiosulfate-Citrate-Bile Salts-Sucrose) is a selective and differential culture medium widely used for the isolation and cultivation of Vibrio cholerae and other enteropathogenic Vibrio species from clinical, food, and water samples.
Composition and Specifications
According to the HiMedia Laboratories technical data sheet, the M189 formulation contains the following ingredients (in g/L):
Proteose Peptone: 10.000 (Provides nitrogen and nutrients)
Yeast Extract: 5.000 (Provides vitamin B complex)
Sucrose: 20.000 (Fermentable carbohydrate)
Sodium Thiosulphate: 10.000 (Sulfur source)
Sodium Citrate: 10.000 (Inhibitory agent)
Bile: 8.000 (Inhibits gram-positive bacteria)
Sodium Chloride: 10.000 (Maintains osmotic balance)
Agar: 15.000 (Solidifying agent)
pH Indicators: Bromothymol blue (0.040) and Thymol blue (0.040)
Final pH: 8.6 ± 0.2 at 25°C.
